Student involvement in societies at a Birmingham university has risen by “60%” this year.
Dan Richards, from Birmingham City University’s Student Union, said the rise in interest was due to first and second students who were “fed up during lockdown”, as they could get involved in activities again.
Dan said that although “last year, societies were able to operate fairly well online”, this new academic year was a “complete flip” for them.
Birmingham City University offers over a hundred societies, ranging from faith-based to media and creativity.
Dan said the spike in interest was “ridiculous”, even though there were so many more opportunities for Freshers this year than last year.
Some students still err on the side of caution, as larger events and big groups are only recently being reintegrated into society as COVID restrictions in the UK were only eased in July.
