Construction for HS2 in Birmingham
The Leeds leg of HS2 was scrapped earlier this week, to the delight of environmental activists in Yorkshire.
The multi-billion pound rail project has been under scrutiny for the disruption of the natural environment since the beginning of its construction.
After the announcement that the Eastern leg was not happening, The Yorkshire Wildlife Trust published an article on their website saying, "Cancelling this section of the huge transport project will save vast swathes of natural wild places and spare the rare birds and carbon-storing habitats that were threatened by the proposed development."
However, no such cancellation is taking place in Birmingham.
Many Twitter users shared their distress that the project is "decimating" wildlife, with one raising the question, "how many wildlife habitats have been pointlessly destroyed and now for the pointless Birmingham-Leeds HS2 route?"
Anti-HS2 campaigners say that the cancellation of the Eastern leg proves that the project wasn't necessary in the first place, with the HS2 Rebellion retweeting the Yorkshire Post's article calling it 'a vanity project.'
Not everyone is happy about this development of HS2, however. The project would have provided great economical boosts with job opportunities, not just working on the construction but by enabling commutes between the midlands and the north.
