An award winning local journalist spoke to the BCU first year journalism students today about how online journalism is essential for getting into the industry.
Lindsey Alder said "multimedia platform journalism is a much bigger thing now than when I started. You can have a portfolio of work [online]; that’s really great for you".
Online journalism on platforms like Twitter and blogging is being more widely used now. Lindsey said "having online blogs is a brilliant way to showcase yourself."
Journalism students at Birmingham City University have blogs to publish their university work and develop their portfolio.
Lindsey also said that when she started, making an online portfolio for herself "wasn't an option" and she had to do "lots of little work placements" to create a portfolio, whereas new journalists now they start their portfolio "from home".
